RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. -- The Port of Palm Beach and a four-block area around it was evacuated Wednesday afternoon, after reports of suspicious activity involving a cargo container. About 100 workers at the port were evacuated.
The Palm Beach Princess gambling ship stayed out to sea during the investigation.
Riviera Beach Mayor Michael Brown told reporters two men were detained, but were later released.
Brown said police officers stopped a car with the two men, who were leaving the port. Police believed one of the men was on a national terrorist watch list.
As a result, authorities evacuated nearby homes and businesses, limited road and boat traffic and began searching containers at the port. Over 140 children at the nearby Boys and Girls Club in Riviera Beach were moved to the Tate Recreation Center, at 1420 W. 10 St., where parents were instructed to pick them up.
A little after 5 p.m., authorities including the FBI determined the alarm was caused by mistaken identity, and reopened the port and surrounding area. No one was arrested.
