Al Qaida Evolves Into Regional Networks

July 19, 2004

MENL -- Al Qaida has adjusted to the U.S.-led war by transforming into regional autonomous networks.

A report said Al Qaida has become a different organization over the last 32 months in wake of the suicide strikes on New York and Washington. Without its haven in Afghanistan, Al Qaida has decentralized with an emerging presence in Iraq.

"Al Qaida has adjusted to the relentless assault on its leadership structure by devolving into a set of regional networks -- each with its own political agenda and operational schedule, as a whole lacking a distinct command center," the Washington Institute said in a report.

[On Saturday, Iranian television announced that authorities arrested an unspecified number of Iranian supporters of Al Qaida. Iranian Intelligence Minister Ali Yunesi was quoted as saying "small Iranian deviate branches of Al Qaida" were detained.]
